Northwestern vs Columbia for city life: which campus feels more urban day to day?
I’m trying to figure out which school would feel more like living in a real city every day. I know Northwestern is near Chicago and Columbia is in New York, but I’m more interested in the actual student experience outside of classes.
I’m someone who likes being able to explore, grab food, and feel like I’m part of the city, so I want to know which one has the stronger city life vibe overall.

Columbia feels more urban day to day. Its campus sits directly in Manhattan, with subway access right by campus, dense city blocks surrounding it, and students regularly stepping off campus into restaurants, cafes, parks, internships, and everyday New York activity. Northwestern gives you access to Chicago, but the lived experience is more residential and campus-centered because you are in Evanston, not downtown Chicago.
One major difference is what happens the moment you leave campus. At Columbia, you are immediately in a true city grid with bodegas, apartment buildings, busy sidewalks, and public transit woven into student life. Going out for food or exploring does not usually feel like a separate trip. It feels like an extension of the school day.
At Northwestern, the area around campus is pleasant and active, but it reads more like a college town and lakefront suburb than a nonstop city environment. Evanston has good restaurants, coffee shops, and a walkable downtown near campus, so there is definitely plenty to do locally. But Chicago is usually something students go into, rather than something they are constantly immersed in every time they walk outside.
Transportation also changes the feel. Columbia students can use the subway as part of normal daily life, which makes the city feel instantly available for meals, events, museums, and neighborhoods beyond campus. Northwestern students can reach Chicago by train, and many do, but that extra layer of planning makes the city feel a bit less embedded in ordinary routines.
If what you want is to feel like you live in the city itself, Columbia is the clearer answer. Northwestern still offers access to a major city, but the day-to-day atmosphere is more contained, calmer, and more traditionally campus-based.
