Carnegie Mellon vs Harvey Mudd for engineering: which is better overall?

I’m trying to decide between Carnegie Mellon and Harvey Mudd for engineering, and both seem really strong in different ways. I know one is a much bigger university and the other is a smaller liberal arts college focused on STEM, but I’m not sure how that affects the actual engineering experience.

For engineering overall, Carnegie Mellon has the broader edge. It offers a much larger engineering ecosystem, more specialized departments and labs, and the resources of a major research university, which matters if you want flexibility across fields or access to large-scale projects. Harvey Mudd is excellent, especially for undergraduate teaching, but CMU is usually viewed as the more expansive engineering platform.

One major difference is range. Carnegie Mellon has multiple established engineering disciplines, extensive research infrastructure, and more room to explore niches or combine engineering with areas like robotics, computer science, design, or public policy. That can make a real difference if your interests shift or if you want access to highly specialized faculty and facilities.

The university setting creates more research volume, more graduate-level activity, and more industry connections across different engineering sectors. That can translate into a wider set of opportunities during college, not just after graduation.

What tips the comparison is that “better overall” usually favors breadth, depth, and institutional reach, and CMU has more of all three. Harvey Mudd is still one of the best places in the country for an undergraduate-focused engineering education, but Carnegie Mellon is more often the stronger answer when the question is engineering as a whole rather than classroom experience alone.
