Is Northeastern or the University of Washington considered more prestigious?

I'm trying to compare these two schools from a reputation standpoint, not just by location or fit. I know both are well-known, but I keep seeing different opinions depending on who I ask.

For someone looking at how the average employer or grad school might view the name, is Northeastern or the University of Washington generally considered more prestigious?

The biggest practical tradeoff is national private-school brand momentum versus long-established public research stature. Northeastern has built a very visible reputation in recent years, especially through co-op, strong outcomes, and a polished urban-professional image. The University of Washington, though, has the deeper institutional reputation overall, with a long history as a major flagship research university and especially strong name recognition in fields like engineering, computer science, medicine, and the sciences.

For average employer or grad school recognition, University of Washington is usually viewed as the more traditionally prestigious institution. It carries the cachet of a major public research university with globally known graduate and research programs, and that tends to matter in academic and professional circles. Northeastern is respected and increasingly well known, but its rise in reputation is newer and often tied more specifically to undergraduate career preparation than to broad institutional prestige.

That said, the picture changes a bit by audience. In the Northeast and among employers who value co-op-heavy resumes, Northeastern can feel especially strong and very current. In academia, research-oriented settings, and many national or international contexts, UW’s name usually lands as more established and weightier.

So if the question is strictly prestige in the eyes of the average employer or grad school, I would give the edge to the University of Washington. Northeastern has excellent momentum and strong outcomes, but UW is more often seen as the bigger-name institution overall.
