Is Northeastern or USC generally considered more prestigious for college admissions and job recruiting?

I'm trying to compare these two schools from a reputation standpoint, not just based on fit or location. I keep hearing both names come up a lot, and I’m not sure which one is generally viewed as the more prestigious option.

I know prestige can be subjective, but I’m mainly asking how they tend to be perceived by employers, graduate programs, and people who follow college reputations.

The biggest practical tradeoff is broad national prestige versus a very distinctive career model. USC usually carries the stronger all-around reputation with employers, graduate schools, and the general public, while Northeastern is especially well known for its co-op system and strong job-readiness. In other words, USC more often wins on name recognition, and Northeastern more often stands out for structured work experience.

For college admissions reputation, USC is typically viewed as the more prestigious of the two. It has longer-established national visibility, a stronger overall brand across many regions, and especially prominent recognition in areas like business, film, communications, and its alumni network.

For job recruiting, the picture is a little more nuanced. USC’s brand is powerful, particularly in California, the West Coast, and industries where alumni connections matter a lot. Northeastern, though, has built a very strong reputation with employers who value graduates with substantial internship or co-op experience, especially in business, tech, engineering, and applied fields. That can make Northeastern grads look exceptionally prepared, even when the school’s overall prestige is seen as somewhat lower.

For graduate programs, USC also tends to have the edge in perceived prestige. A USC degree usually carries more broad academic and institutional cachet. Northeastern is respected, but its reputation is often tied more to professional preparation than to overall elite-university status.

So if the question is strictly which school is generally considered more prestigious, the answer is USC. Northeastern is well regarded and very visible, but its reputation is more specialized: strong career outcomes, strong experiential learning, and rising status rather than the same level of across-the-board prestige.
