How does UC Berkeley compare to Columbia in prestige for college applications and job recruiting?
I’m trying to understand how these two schools are generally viewed outside of rankings. I keep hearing different things about UC Berkeley and Columbia when it comes to prestige, especially for college applications and recruiting.
I want a clearer sense of how people usually compare them in terms of reputation.

The biggest practical tradeoff is broad, public-school scale and powerhouse reputation in many fields at UC Berkeley versus the smaller, private-school brand and East Coast elite signaling of Columbia. Outside of rankings, both are seen as top-tier names, but they carry slightly different kinds of prestige. Berkeley is especially respected for academic rigor, research, engineering, computer science, economics, and public-impact fields, while Columbia often gets an extra boost in settings where Ivy branding, finance, consulting, law-adjacent circles, and East Coast social prestige matter.
For college applications such as grad school, law school, med school, or PhD programs, neither school will hold you back. Berkeley often impresses people who know academia well because its departments are famously strong and the coursework can be very demanding. Columbia’s name can read as a bit more uniformly polished to people who are less familiar with specific departments and more influenced by the Ivy label.
For job recruiting, the answer depends a lot on industry and geography. In tech, engineering, startups, and many research-heavy fields, Berkeley is at least as strong as Columbia and often has the edge, especially in California and the West Coast ecosystem. In finance, certain consulting pipelines, and some East Coast networking environments, Columbia can have a slight prestige advantage because of location, alumni concentration, and the immediate pull of the Ivy brand.
In everyday reputation, Columbia may be perceived as more conventionally prestigious by the general public, while Berkeley is often viewed by employers and academics as an institution with extraordinary substance and elite departments. So the short version is that Columbia has a somewhat stronger all-purpose prestige signal, but Berkeley is absolutely in the same top tier and can be equal or stronger where academic strength, technical talent, and specific departmental reputation matter most.
