Which has better school spirit, Michigan or USC?
I’m trying to get a feel for the campus culture at both schools and school spirit seems like a big part of that. I keep hearing that Michigan has a huge sports culture and that USC has a very active student life too.
For a student who wants a really spirited, energetic atmosphere, which school is generally considered to have stronger school spirit?

Michigan is usually the one people point to for stronger, more visible school spirit. The combination of Big Ten football culture, Ann Arbor’s college-town environment, and the way weekends center around campus creates a very immersive atmosphere. At USC, school pride is real and often intense, but it tends to feel more tied to certain traditions, alumni identity, and big events rather than surrounding everyday campus life in quite the same all-encompassing way.
A student who wants school spirit to shape the rhythm of the entire week often finds Michigan especially compelling. Game days take over Ann Arbor, and the fact that the university dominates the town gives spirit a constant presence. Even students who are not hardcore sports fans often absorb the energy because it is so woven into campus culture.
USC fits a student who wants strong pride in a more urban, less enclosed setting. USC has famous traditions, a loyal alumni network, and plenty of excitement around football, but Los Angeles naturally pulls student life in more directions beyond campus. That can make school spirit feel vibrant without always being the single defining feature of social life.
If by “better” you mean louder, broader, and harder to avoid, Michigan probably has the edge. If you like spirited campuses but want that energy mixed with city life, entertainment, and a student culture that is not as fully centered on one college-town bubble, USC may feel more natural.
