How do Michigan and Tulane compare for school spirit and campus vibe?

I’m trying to get a sense of what daily life feels like at each school, especially around traditions, sports, and how much students seem to participate in campus events.

Both are on my list, but I keep hearing very different things about the atmosphere at Michigan and Tulane, and I want to understand how school spirit actually shows up for students.

Michigan and Tulane feel very different in everyday campus energy. Michigan has one of the most visible school-spirit cultures in the country, with big-time athletics, packed football Saturdays, long-standing traditions, and a campus where wearing maize and blue is part of daily life. Tulane also has school pride, but the vibe is less centered on sports and more tied to the social atmosphere of New Orleans, campus festivals, Mardi Gras season, and a student culture that often mixes campus life with the city around it.

Michigan tends to fit students who want a classic large-university atmosphere where campus events feel communal and highly attended. Game days are a major part of the rhythm of the year, and even students who are not huge sports fans usually feel the energy because it is so visible across campus. Traditions, student organizations, residence hall life, and the sheer scale of the student body create a feeling that something is always happening.

Tulane often appeals more to students who want a spirited campus without having their identity dominated by athletics. There is enthusiasm around events and campus traditions, but the social scene is usually described as more lifestyle-driven than rah-rah. Students often talk about the balance between campus and city life, with weekends, service, food, music, and neighborhood culture shaping the vibe as much as anything happening in a stadium.

Another difference is how contained the campus experience feels. Michigan has a stronger sense of being part of a huge university community with very established rituals and a lot of collective participation. Tulane feels more intimate and socially active, but also more outward-facing, since New Orleans is such a big part of what students do.

If school spirit to you means crowds, traditions, and a campus that rallies around athletics in a very obvious way, Michigan stands out. If it means enjoying a lively student culture in a warm, social environment where the city itself becomes part of the experience, Tulane has a distinct appeal.
