How does campus weather compare between the University of Michigan and San Diego for student life?

I'm trying to get a feel for what day-to-day life would actually be like at each school, especially since the climates are so different. I know Michigan gets much colder winters and San Diego is milder, but I'm wondering how that affects being outside, walking to class, and overall campus vibe.

I'm mostly asking because weather is one of the biggest comfort factors for me when picking a college.

Weather changes daily life in a very noticeable way at these two schools. At the University of Michigan, you should expect a real four-season experience with cold, windy winters, regular snow, and a campus culture built around layering up, walking through slush at times, and still going about your day. At UC San Diego, the climate is much milder year-round, with cool mornings, sunny afternoons, and far fewer days when weather seriously disrupts being outside.

Michigan tends to fit students who do not mind adapting their routines to the season, or who even like that seasonal shift. Fall in Ann Arbor is beautiful and very active, but winter can make simple things like getting to an early class, waiting for a bus, or crossing campus feel more demanding. Student life still happens, but people often become more intentional about indoor hangouts, study spots, and planning around the cold.

UC San Diego is more comfortable for students who want weather to fade into the background instead of shaping their day. You can usually walk to class, eat outside, study outdoors, or head to the beach without much logistical stress from the climate. That creates a campus feel that is often more open-air and casual, especially since students can spend time outside throughout most of the academic year.

The tradeoff is that Michigan’s weather can create a stronger sense of seasonal rhythm, which some students really enjoy. There is something distinctive about football season in crisp fall weather, the first snowfall, and the campus changing mood across the year. San Diego is easier physically day to day, but some students feel the steadiness makes the school year feel less marked by seasonal change.

If weather is one of your biggest comfort factors, UC San Diego has the easier day-to-day climate by a wide margin. Michigan is very manageable, but only if you are genuinely okay with cold walks, gray winter stretches, and a campus experience where the season really does affect how you live.
