How do Michigan and Purdue compare in campus size and feel?
I’m trying to get a sense of how different the two campuses actually feel day to day, especially in terms of walking distances and how spread out everything is. I’ve heard Michigan feels more like a big college town while Purdue is a little more compact, but I’m not sure how true that is.
I’m mostly asking because campus size affects whether I’d rather be somewhere more walkable or somewhere that feels bigger and more open.

Michigan feels bigger and more spread into the city, while Purdue is easier to navigate day to day. Ann Arbor blends the university into a full college town with academic buildings, restaurants, housing, and downtown streets all woven together, so it can feel lively but less contained. Purdue’s main campus in West Lafayette is large, but it reads as more self-contained and straightforward, with many core academic spaces clustered more tightly.
At Michigan, walking can feel longer because the university is divided across distinct areas, especially Central Campus and North Campus. Central is where a lot of the classic campus energy is, but some students regularly use buses to get between major parts of campus, which adds to the sense that Michigan is a bigger operation. The city setting also means your daily route may include crowded streets, shops, and off-campus buildings rather than one continuous campus.
Purdue usually feels more compact in the places students use most often. The academic core, student union area, and many residence halls are close enough that the campus often feels efficient and practical to get around on foot or by bike. Even though Purdue has a substantial footprint, it tends to feel more like a unified campus than a university layered into a downtown.
The atmosphere is different too. Michigan has more of that busy college-town energy, with campus and town constantly mixing together, which can make it feel bigger and more open-ended. Purdue feels more campus-centered and a little less urban, so students who care about convenience and a clearer day-to-day layout often notice that difference quickly.
