Is Rice harder to get into than MIT?

MIT is harder to get into than Rice overall. Both are highly selective, but MIT draws a uniquely self-selecting pool of applicants with very strong preparation in math and science, and its admissions process is especially tough because so many applicants are an academic fit on paper. Rice is also extremely competitive, yet MIT is usually viewed as the more difficult admit.

One concrete difference is applicant pool intensity. MIT attracts a very high concentration of students aiming specifically for elite STEM programs, including many with top-level quantitative coursework, research, Olympiad-level interests, or exceptional technical achievement. Rice gets outstanding applicants too, but its pool is broader across disciplines and not quite as compressed at that extreme level.

Another difference is institutional positioning and demand. MIT has a singular global reputation in engineering, computer science, math, and related fields, so students who want that kind of education often see it as a first-choice destination rather than one strong option among several. That creates unusually fierce competition even among applicants who already look exceptional by any normal standard.

Admissions at both schools are holistic, so neither is predictable, and a student could be admitted to MIT and denied by Rice or the reverse. But if the question is simply which school is tougher to get into in the broadest sense, MIT is the clearer answer.
