Is the University of Michigan or Brown University considered more prestigious?

I’m trying to get a better sense of how people generally view these schools outside of just rankings. Both seem strong, but I hear different things depending on who I ask.

I’m mainly curious about the overall prestige of Michigan versus Brown in college conversations and in how employers or grad schools might see them.

The biggest practical tradeoff is private Ivy League cachet versus the reach and scale of a flagship public powerhouse. Brown tends to carry more immediate name prestige in casual college conversations because it is an Ivy. Michigan, though, has enormous national respect, a huge alumni network, and standout strength across many departments and professional fields, so it is not viewed as a lesser school in any simple sense.

If you mean broad social prestige, Brown usually comes out ahead. Outside academia, many people recognize the Ivy label first, and Brown benefits from that shorthand.

But Michigan has a different kind of prestige that is very real. It is especially admired for engineering, business, economics, public policy, the social sciences, and research overall. In some industries and regions, especially the Midwest and among large employers, Michigan’s reputation is exceptionally strong and can feel every bit as powerful as Brown’s, sometimes more so in specific programs.

For employers and grad schools, the school-wide prestige gap matters less than people often think once your field is considered. A Michigan student in a top program with strong internships, research, or recommendations will be seen as coming from a top-tier institution too.

So in pure overall prestige, Brown is more likely to be considered the more prestigious name. In real outcomes, especially by major and career path, Michigan is close enough that the difference is often smaller than the conversation around prestige makes it sound.
