Is the University of Michigan considered more prestigious than Ohio State?

I’m trying to compare colleges on reputation because both seem strong overall and I keep hearing different opinions from people around me.

I know prestige is subjective, but I want to understand how these two schools are generally viewed by employers and other colleges.

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Michigan carries a stronger national academic brand, while Ohio State has enormous reach, a powerful alumni network, and strong name recognition that can matter a lot by region and field. In most academic and professional settings, the University of Michigan is viewed as the more prestigious of the two.

Michigan tends to be seen as more selective and more elite overall, with especially strong cachet in areas like engineering, business, economics, political science, and many liberal arts fields. Ohio State is still a highly respected flagship public university, but its reputation is usually described as excellent and broad rather than quite as rarefied.

For employers, the gap exists but is not always decisive. A Michigan degree may draw a bit more immediate prestige, especially in competitive recruiting pipelines or for jobs on the coasts. Ohio State, though, is very well known, sends graduates into major companies and graduate schools, and has a large alumni network, which can translate into real opportunities.

So yes, Michigan is generally considered more prestigious than Ohio State. But the difference matters most in reputation-sensitive contexts, while in many practical situations your major, internships, grades, and network will matter at least as much as the name on the diploma.
