MIT vs Cornell for undergraduate research opportunities: which is better for students who want to get involved early?
I’m a high school junior trying to figure out which school would be a better fit if I want to do a lot of undergraduate research. I know both MIT and Cornell are strong academically, but I’m especially interested in how easy it is for undergrads to find research opportunities early on.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus concentration: Cornell gives you a huge university with an enormous range of labs and fields, while MIT offers a more tightly research-centered environment where undergraduate involvement is especially visible and built into the culture from the start. At MIT, research is not treated as something only upperclassmen do; programs like UROP make first-year participation normal and easy to understand. Cornell absolutely has abundant opportunities too, but because it is much larger and more decentralized, finding the right lab can take more self-direction.

But the path is often less unified than MIT’s, and that matters if you want a school where early research is especially easy to plug into.
Another practical difference is advising and visibility. At MIT, research opportunities are highly legible: students talk about them constantly, and the school’s culture strongly reinforces the idea that undergraduates belong in labs. At Cornell, opportunities are plentiful, but you may need to navigate a bigger system and do more of the searching yourself.
