Is the University of Delaware or the University of Virginia harder to get into?

The University of Virginia is harder to get into overall. It is widely viewed as a much more selective university than the University of Delaware, and that is especially true for students applying from out of state. UVA also tends to attract a larger share of applicants with very strong grades, rigorous coursework, and standout extracurricular profiles.

For a student building a list, UVA usually belongs in the more competitive category, while Delaware is more accessible for a broader range of strong applicants. That does not mean Delaware is easy or automatic, but in a direct comparison, UVA is the tougher admit.

Part of the difference comes from the type of institution UVA is. It is a flagship public university with a national applicant pool, a strong academic reputation across many departments, and limited space for non-Virginia residents. That combination makes admissions more selective in practice.

Delaware is also a respected public university and can be competitive in certain majors or for merit aid, but it is not typically placed in the same selectivity tier as UVA.
