Which offers better value for money for engineering: the University of Delaware or Virginia Tech?

I’m a high school senior choosing between the University of Delaware and Virginia Tech for engineering. After scholarships, the total cost would be fairly similar, so I’m trying to understand which school generally provides stronger value through academic quality, career outcomes, and opportunities relative to the cost.

With costs essentially equal, Virginia Tech is the stronger value for most engineering students. Its College of Engineering is larger, has a particularly deep engineering-focused recruiting ecosystem, and offers broad strength across major fields such as mechanical, computer, electrical, civil, aerospace, and industrial and systems engineering. Virginia Tech’s engineering career fairs and employer relationships make it especially well positioned for students seeking internships and full-time technical roles.

Virginia Tech also provides a more immersive engineering environment. In Blacksburg, engineering is a central part of campus culture, with extensive design teams, research labs, makerspaces, project-based organizations, and student competitions. That concentration can make it easier to find peers, faculty projects, and extracurricular experience directly tied to an engineering career.

The University of Delaware remains a very good option, and it can be the more compelling choice for certain interests. Delaware has notable strengths in chemical engineering, materials science, chemistry-related research, and areas connected to its STAR Campus and nearby science and industrial employers. Its location also offers practical access to the Philadelphia, Wilmington, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. corridors, which can be useful for internships during the academic year.

Delaware deserves serious consideration if your intended field aligns closely with its chemical, materials, biomedical, or sustainability-related opportunities, or if its Mid-Atlantic location better supports the internships and professional network you want to build.
