It has a long-established pre-health culture, very strong advising for students aiming at medical school, and unusually easy access to major hospitals and biomedical research through the Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital right near campus.

The biggest difference is the medical ecosystem around you. At WashU, pre-med opportunities are tightly woven into campus life, so research labs, physician shadowing, hospital volunteering, and medically related student organizations are all highly visible and easier to plug into early. UT Austin absolutely has strong science departments and a huge research university environment, but the path can feel more self-directed because the university is so large and pre-med is just one track among many.

Advising is another place where WashU stands out. Students there tend to benefit from a more concentrated advising structure for pre-health, with a campus culture where many classmates, professors, and administrators understand the med school timeline and expectations well.
