UC Berkeley vs NYU: which is better value for money for undergrads?

I’m trying to compare these two schools from a cost vs outcome perspective, not just ranking. UC Berkeley and NYU both seem strong academically, but the total price and expected return feel very different.

I’m mostly trying to understand which one is generally considered the better value for money for an undergraduate degree.

The biggest practical tradeoff is cost structure: UC Berkeley can be an outstanding bargain for California residents, while NYU is usually much more expensive and only makes financial sense when its aid package substantially lowers the price. Berkeley also has a stronger public-university value reputation, especially in high-demand fields like engineering, computer science, economics, and many sciences. NYU offers real advantages in location, industry access, and certain programs, but on pure cost-to-outcome terms, it is harder to call the better buy at full price.

For in-state students, Berkeley is the clearer value in most cases. You get a globally recognized degree, very strong recruiting, and access to one of the deepest alumni and employer networks in the country, all at a tuition level that is usually far below NYU’s. That gap matters a lot because both schools can lead to strong outcomes, so paying dramatically more for NYU often does not produce a proportionally higher return.

For out-of-state students, the comparison gets closer, but Berkeley still often comes out better unless NYU gives unusually strong aid. Berkeley’s nonresident cost is high, so the value edge shrinks. Even so, Berkeley tends to carry especially strong academic and employer prestige across many undergraduate disciplines, which helps justify the expense more than NYU at similar net prices.

NYU can be worth it for students who want specific strengths tied to New York City, especially in finance, media, arts, entertainment, business, and certain pre-professional paths where semester-time networking and internships matter a lot. But NYU’s overall price is famously steep, and many families find the debt risk hard to justify unless the net cost is brought down meaningfully.

So in a straight value-for-money comparison, UC Berkeley usually wins, especially for California residents and for students entering broadly strong academic fields. NYU becomes the better financial choice only in narrower situations, mainly when the aid is much better or when its location-based opportunities directly match the student’s goals.
