Is UC Berkeley or Stanford considered more prestigious for college admissions and careers?

Stanford is usually seen as more prestigious overall, especially in admissions and in broad national and international reputation. UC Berkeley is still one of the most respected universities in the world, but its reputation is a little different: more public, more accessible at scale, and especially dominant in certain academic and technical fields.

In admissions, Stanford has the stronger prestige signal because people associate it with extreme selectivity, strong undergraduate focus, and a high concentration of resources per student. That matters in how counselors, families, and even other colleges talk about it. Berkeley is also highly respected, but because it is a large public flagship with a broader mission, people do not usually attach the same exclusivity to it even though many of its programs are exceptional.

For careers, the gap depends on field. In tech, engineering, computer science, economics, and many research-heavy areas, Berkeley’s name carries enormous weight and can rival Stanford in practical credibility. Employers know Berkeley produces outstanding students at scale, and its alumni network in California and major technical industries is very strong.

Outside those fields, Stanford’s brand is often more uniformly powerful. In finance, consulting, startups, policy, and prestige-conscious professional settings, the Stanford name tends to travel more cleanly and impress more immediately.

So for straightforward overall reputation, Stanford has the edge. Berkeley is not far behind in intellectual reputation and can be just as compelling, or even stronger, in some disciplines, but Stanford is the name most people would label as more prestigious in the broadest sense.
