Its location near Washington, DC matters a lot, because students can realistically commute to internships in federal agencies, nonprofits, consulting firms, and major employers around College Park, DC, and Northern Virginia. Rutgers can also be strong, especially for students targeting New York City, New Jersey pharma, healthcare, finance, and corporate roles, but the access is a bit more spread out and often depends more on how proactive you are with commuting and networking.

Maryland tends to work especially well for the student who wants internships built into the academic-year rhythm. Being close to DC creates a very large market for part-time semester internships, and that is a real advantage if you are interested in political science, international relations, economics, journalism, computer science, or business fields tied to government or policy.

Rutgers makes more sense for the student who wants access to multiple big job markets rather than one dominant hub. New Brunswick puts you between New York and Philadelphia, and Rutgers has strong connections in New Jersey industries like pharmaceuticals, healthcare, logistics, and some finance and media pathways. That can be excellent for summer internships, and during the school year too, but transportation and time management can matter more, especially if the internship is in Manhattan.

If your main goal is maximum internship density during the school year, Maryland is typically the more convenient setup. If your interests line up more with NYC or New Jersey employers and you are comfortable being very intentional about commuting, Rutgers can absolutely pay off, but Maryland usually offers the smoother path to frequent undergraduate internship access.
