How does Georgia Tech admissions difficulty compare to Purdue for engineering applicants?

I’m trying to build a realistic college list and both of these schools keep coming up for engineering. I know they are both strong options, but they seem to have very different reputations for selectivity.

I’m mainly trying to understand how hard it is to get into Georgia Tech compared with Purdue for someone applying to engineering.

The biggest practical difference is that Georgia Tech is typically much tougher to get into for engineering, especially for out-of-state applicants, while Purdue engineering is still selective but usually more attainable for a wider range of strong students. Both schools have nationally respected engineering programs, but Georgia Tech draws an especially intense applicant pool and has less room for non-Georgia residents. Purdue’s First-Year Engineering pathway is also competitive, yet it tends to be a more realistic target than Georgia Tech for many applicants with similar academics.

For admissions planning, I would treat Georgia Tech engineering as a reach for most out-of-state students unless the rest of the application is exceptionally strong. Purdue can still be a reach or high target depending on grades, course rigor, and residency, but it is not usually in the same level of difficulty as Georgia Tech. In-state status matters at both schools, though it is especially important at Georgia Tech because Georgia residents benefit from a clearer admissions advantage.

Another difference is how each school structures engineering entry. At Purdue, many students enter through First-Year Engineering and then move into a specific major later, so the question is often admission to engineering broadly rather than to one exact discipline. At Georgia Tech, applicants are entering a highly selective overall admissions process at a school with very high demand across STEM fields.

Georgia Tech is the harder admit in most cases, and often by a noticeable margin for engineering applicants. Purdue is still far from easy, especially for popular engineering interests, but on a realistic college list it usually belongs a step below Georgia Tech in selectivity.
