How does Georgia Tech compare to UNC Chapel Hill in admissions difficulty?

I’m trying to build a realistic college list and keep seeing Georgia Tech and UNC Chapel Hill mentioned as similar top public schools, but I’m not sure how their admissions difficulty compares overall.

I know they’re both competitive, so I want a general sense of which one is harder to get into for a typical high school applicant.

For a typical high school applicant, Georgia Tech is often a bit harder to get into overall, especially if you are applying for engineering, computer science, or another high-demand STEM major. Georgia Tech is very focused on academic strength in math and science, and many of its applicants are targeting a narrower set of highly competitive programs. UNC Chapel Hill is also very selective, but its applicant pool is broader across majors and academic interests.

One big factor is residency. UNC Chapel Hill gives a significant advantage to North Carolina residents, so for in-state students UNC can feel more accessible than Georgia Tech might be. For out-of-state students, UNC becomes much tougher, and in some cases it can be as hard as or harder than Georgia Tech depending on the applicant profile.

Georgia Tech tends to attract students with especially strong quantitative preparation, advanced math coursework, and clear interest in technical fields. If a student has top grades but less of a STEM-heavy background, UNC may be the more realistic of the two. UNC still expects excellent academics, but it is not as centered around one academic style or preprofessional track.

So the clearest way to think about it is this: Georgia Tech is often tougher in the STEM applicant lane, while UNC can be extremely difficult for out-of-state students. If you are in North Carolina and not applying to an intensely competitive STEM major, UNC may be slightly more attainable. If you are an out-of-state applicant comparing the two broadly, they are both reaches, with Georgia Tech often feeling tougher for engineering-focused students and UNC sometimes feeling just as difficult.
