Is Columbia or Yale more fun for undergraduates?

I’m trying to get a feel for campus life beyond academics because both schools seem amazing on paper. I keep hearing very different stereotypes about the vibe at Columbia and Yale, especially when it comes to social life and how students spend their weekends.

I’m mostly curious about which one tends to feel more fun and lively for undergrads in a normal week.

For most undergrads, Yale tends to feel more traditionally fun and socially cohesive, while Columbia feels more open-ended and city-driven. Yale has a residential college system that gives students built-in community, frequent on-campus events, and a social scene that is easier to plug into without much planning. Columbia’s social life is very real, but it is less centered on campus and more tied to New York, which can make the week feel exciting but also more scattered.

Yale fits the student who wants campus life to come to them. A lot of weekend energy is concentrated around the residential colleges, student performances, parties, athletic events, and shared traditions, so even a normal week can feel lively without leaving New Haven. People often describe Yale as having a strong undergraduate identity, and that matters because fun there is not just about nightlife, it is also about running into friends, late-night food, college events, and a campus culture where undergrads are the center of attention.

Columbia fits the student who gets energized by independence and the city itself. In Morningside Heights, campus can feel compact and busy, but the real advantage is immediate access to Manhattan for restaurants, concerts, internships, museums, and nights out. That can be thrilling if your version of fun is variety and freedom, though it also means students are often doing different things in different places rather than participating in one shared campus scene.

In a normal week, Yale usually feels more consistently social in the everyday sense. Columbia can absolutely be more exciting for someone who wants urban energy, but Yale is more likely to deliver the classic lively undergraduate atmosphere people mean when they ask whether a school is fun.
