Are Emory and Northwestern considered similarly selective for undergraduate admission?

The main practical difference is that Northwestern tends to sit in a slightly more selective admissions tier, while Emory is still highly selective enough that neither should be treated as a likely or “safe” option. Both schools receive applications from students with very strong grades, rigorous coursework, substantial involvement, and polished essays. At each, academic preparation is necessary but rarely sufficient by itself.

That does not mean Emory is easy or meaningfully predictable: a student who is competitive at Northwestern can be denied by Emory, and the reverse can also happen. Differences in institutional priorities, intended academic interests, recommendations, essays, and the overall shape of the incoming class can matter at both places.

For list-building purposes, it makes sense to place both in the reach category unless your profile is unusually distinctive in addition to being academically excellent. Avoid assuming that an Emory acceptance is a fallback outcome if Northwestern does not work out; the two applications should receive the same level of care, particularly the school-specific writing.
