Is Emory or Rice generally harder to get into for undergraduate admission?

In a broad, non-year-specific sense, Rice is typically a little harder to gain admission to than Emory. Both schools are highly selective and reject many well-qualified applicants, but Rice enrolls a notably smaller undergraduate class and draws an especially concentrated pool of applicants attracted to its close-knit residential-college environment and strong academic reputation.

Rice can be particularly difficult for students whose applications look excellent but do not make a clear case for why its collaborative, campus-centered culture fits them. Its small scale means there are fewer places for applicants across every academic interest, not only for students focused on science or engineering.

Emory is also a reach for most applicants, but it offers somewhat more undergraduate entry paths, including Emory College and Oxford College. A student who is excited by Emory’s location in Atlanta, its broader university setting, and the possibility of beginning at Oxford may find a more natural fit there. That does not make Emory easy to enter; it simply means its applicant pool and enrollment structure are somewhat less constrained than Rice’s.
