Which is better for DC internships: Northwestern or Georgetown?
I’m trying to decide between Northwestern and Georgetown, and one thing I care a lot about is getting internship opportunities in Washington, DC. I know Georgetown is in DC, but Northwestern seems to have a strong national network and good career resources too.
I’m mostly trying to understand which school gives undergrads a better path to DC internships overall.

Georgetown has the clearer edge for DC internships because location matters a lot here, and being in Washington makes semester-time internships, networking, and last-minute opportunities much easier to access. Georgetown undergrads can intern during the academic year without needing to relocate, and the school’s ties to government, policy, nonprofits, media, and international affairs are especially deep in the city.
The biggest differentiator is simple access. At Georgetown, students can take classes and commute to internships on the Hill, at federal agencies, think tanks, embassies, consulting offices, or major nonprofits during the same semester. That creates more chances to build experience earlier and stack multiple DC roles before graduation. At Northwestern, DC internships are absolutely possible, but they are more likely to happen over the summer or through a specific program rather than as a routine part of the school year.
Another difference is how embedded each school is in the local professional ecosystem. Georgetown has a long-established presence in politics, public policy, law, foreign service, journalism, and adjacent fields, so employers in DC are very used to hiring Georgetown students. That familiarity shows up in alumni connections, campus events with policymakers and employers, and the day-to-day visibility students have in the city.
Northwestern’s network is excellent and very national, which helps a lot for competitive internships overall. It can be especially strong for journalism, consulting, and some policy-adjacent paths, and Northwestern students do land in DC. But if the question is specifically which school gives an undergraduate the more direct, repeatable, low-friction path to DC internships, Georgetown is the one with the built-in advantage.
