Northwestern or Tufts for international relations: which is the better choice?

I’m trying to figure out which school would be a stronger fit for studying international relations. Both Northwestern and Tufts seem appealing to me for different reasons, but I’m not sure how to compare them for this major.

I’m mostly interested in which one is generally better known for international relations and related opportunities.

For international relations, Tufts has the clearer reputation and identity. Its Fletcher School gives the university unusual depth in diplomacy, global affairs, languages, and policy, and that influence reaches the undergraduate experience through courses, faculty interests, events, and the campus culture around IR. If you already know you want a college where international relations is one of the most visible academic strengths, Tufts stands out.

Tufts tends to fit students who want IR to feel central to the university’s academic personality. The atmosphere is often especially attractive for students interested in diplomacy, human rights, development, migration, and public policy.

Northwestern makes more sense for a student who wants international relations within a broader, more interdisciplinary environment. It has strong political science, economics, history, journalism, and area studies, and its quarter system can make it easier to explore across fields. That can be appealing if your interests in global affairs overlap with media, business, data, or regional studies rather than fitting neatly into a classic IR path.

Northwestern also offers the resources of a larger research university, with strong internship access through Chicago and a wide range of globally oriented programs. But IR is not quite as signature an area there as it is at Tufts.

So if your question is which school is better known for IR and related opportunities, Tufts has the edge. Northwestern is still a strong option, especially for someone who wants a bigger university feel and a less specialized IR identity.
