Boston University or Northeastern for co-op: which is better for students who want work experience in college?

Northeastern is the stronger choice if your top priority is structured work experience during college. Co-op is built into Northeastern’s identity in a way that is much more central than at Boston University, and the school has longstanding systems for alternating semesters of classes and full-time paid work. That matters because it affects advising, employer pipelines, course planning, and how normal it is for students to spend substantial time in professional roles before graduating.

The biggest differentiator is that Northeastern’s co-op program is not just an extra opportunity on the side. It is a signature part of the undergraduate experience, with dedicated support and a large employer network that expects to hire Northeastern students in that format. At BU, students absolutely do get internships and can take advantage of Boston’s location, but the experience is usually more traditional: summer internships, school-year internships, and campus recruiting rather than a university-wide co-op structure.

Another difference is how work experience fits academically. Northeastern is designed so students can complete serious full-time work terms without it feeling unusual or difficult to arrange. At BU, professional experience is often more dependent on your major, your initiative, and the specific school within BU, so outcomes can be excellent but less uniformly baked into the undergraduate path.

Employer perception is also shaped by that structure. A Northeastern student often graduates with multiple substantial work experiences that are longer and more immersive than a typical internship, which can be especially valuable in fields like business, engineering, computer science, and health-related areas. BU still offers strong access to Boston employers and a respected name, but for a student choosing mainly on work experience, Northeastern has the clearer edge.
