Is Boston University worth it compared to NYU for undergrad?

BU tends to offer a more traditional campus feel along Commonwealth Avenue, somewhat more cohesive student life, and stronger day-to-day community than NYU’s highly decentralized setup in Manhattan. For many undergrads, that translates into a college experience that feels more connected without giving up access to a major city.

One big differentiator is campus structure. BU has a defined campus, consistent residential life, and a clearer sense of being part of one student body, while NYU is integrated into New York City in a way that can feel exciting but also fragmented. A lot of students love NYU precisely because it is embedded in the city, but others find that it lacks the classic undergrad environment they expected.

Another factor is cost relative to student experience. NYU has a longstanding reputation for being extremely expensive, and many families question whether the premium is justified unless the student has a very specific reason for NYU, such as a particular program, direct industry access, or a strong preference for living in Manhattan.

Career access matters too, but the gap is not as large as people sometimes assume. NYU benefits from being in New York and has obvious advantages in industries like finance, media, entertainment, and some arts fields. BU, though, has excellent internship access in Boston, strong academics, and a large alumni network, so for most students the outcome difference is not dramatic enough on its own to justify paying much more for NYU.

The main exception is if you are targeting an NYU signature area where location and industry integration are central to the experience.
