How should I choose between UC Berkeley and WashU for college?

Pick UC Berkeley if you want the bigger academic ecosystem and are comfortable navigating a more independent, high-energy environment; pick WashU if you want more structure, easier access to professors and advising, and a more contained campus experience. Berkeley is much larger, sits in the middle of the Bay Area, and tends to feel more intense and self-directed day to day. WashU is more residential, more curated in student life, and often feels easier to manage socially and academically.

The biggest practical difference is scale. At Berkeley, the upside of size is enormous course variety, a huge alumni network, and strong opportunities across fields, especially if you like being surrounded by ambitious students and a fast-moving culture. The tradeoff is that you may need to advocate for yourself more, especially in large introductory classes, registration, or finding mentorship early.

The next major separator is campus environment. WashU has a more traditional campus feel, with much of student life centered around the university itself. Berkeley is deeply connected to the city around it, and that creates more energy, activism, off-campus options, and access to internships, but it also means less of a bubble and more daily friction around housing, logistics, and noise.

Academic culture also feels different. Berkeley often has a sharper edge intellectually, with a stronger public-university intensity and a culture that can feel competitive simply because so many driven students are packed into one place. WashU tends to come across as more supported and student-centered, where the institution may feel more responsive on an individual level.

Cost should matter a lot here too. If Berkeley is in-state for you, that can be a very strong reason to choose it. If the prices are close, then the better choice depends less on prestige and more on whether you want a highly independent, urban, high-volume experience or a more personal, residential one.
