Is UC Berkeley or USC better for engineering undergrad students?

I’m a high school junior trying to narrow down my college list, and both UC Berkeley and USC are on it because I want to study engineering. I keep seeing both schools mentioned a lot, but it’s hard to tell which one is generally stronger for an undergraduate engineering experience.

I’m mostly trying to understand the overall difference in reputation and academic strength for engineering.

For undergraduate engineering, UC Berkeley is usually seen as having the stronger overall academic reputation. Berkeley’s College of Engineering is especially well known across multiple fields, and its engineering programs are closely tied to top-tier research and deep connections to Silicon Valley. If you are asking which name carries more weight purely for engineering strength and prestige, Berkeley usually has the edge.

Berkeley tends to fit students who want a very rigorous, high-powered engineering environment and are comfortable in a place that can feel intense and less hand-holding. It is especially appealing for students who want to be surrounded by a large concentration of engineering talent, take part in serious technical research, and benefit from the school’s longstanding reputation in areas like EECS, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, and chemical engineering. The scale of Berkeley also means a huge course catalog, many research labs, and strong recruiting in tech and engineering.

USC makes more sense for students who want a strong engineering education but also value a more polished undergraduate experience with smaller classes, more individualized support, and a campus culture that can feel more student-centered. USC Viterbi is very well respected and has strong industry ties, especially in areas connected to Southern California and entrepreneurship. For some students, that combination of solid engineering, better access to advising, and a more cohesive campus experience can matter just as much as raw academic prestige.

In reputation alone, Berkeley is the one most people would identify first for engineering. In undergraduate experience, USC can be more attractive for students who care about mentorship, campus life, and a less sink-or-swim atmosphere. Cost can also matter a lot here, while USC can become realistic if merit aid or need-based aid changes the price substantially.
