University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign vs Ohio State for pre-vet: which is better for preparing for veterinary school?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: UIUC gives you direct access to a top-tier veterinary ecosystem on campus, while Ohio State gives you a very large university with strong animal science resources but a pre-vet path that is a bit less centered around an on-campus vet school experience. For pre-vet, that matters because shadowing, research, advising, and clinical exposure are often easier to build when the veterinary college is deeply woven into the undergraduate environment. Both can get you to vet school, but UIUC tends to offer a more naturally aligned setup for that goal.

UIUC’s main advantage is its College of Veterinary Medicine and the way it connects with animal sciences, research, and agricultural programs in Urbana-Champaign. If you want undergraduate access to faculty doing veterinary-related research, large-animal opportunities, and a campus culture where pre-vet is a very established track, UIUC has a real edge. It is one of those schools where pre-vet does not feel like a side path built on top of a biology major, because the infrastructure for animal-focused students is already there.

Ohio State is still a strong option. It also has a respected College of Veterinary Medicine, substantial research activity, and plenty of ways to complete prerequisites and find relevant experience. Its size can be a plus if you want broad major options, lots of student organizations, and flexibility to explore.

For pure pre-vet preparation, I would lean UIUC. The combination of animal science strength, veterinary school presence, and the overall agricultural and animal-focused ecosystem makes it especially well suited to someone who already knows vet school is the plan. Ohio State remains a very credible path, but UIUC more often stands out as the school built more directly around the kind of preparation pre-vet students are trying to assemble.
