Is NYU or Stanford more prestigious?

I’m trying to understand how people generally view these schools, not just rankings on paper. I know both are well known, but I keep hearing different opinions about which one carries more prestige overall.

I’m asking because I’m trying to get a better sense of how each name is perceived by employers, grad schools, and the general public.

Stanford is more prestigious overall in the way employers, graduate programs, and the general public usually perceive college names. It tends to carry broader national and international cachet, and its reputation is especially strong across technology, engineering, entrepreneurship, sciences, and highly selective graduate pathways. NYU is absolutely well known, but its prestige is more uneven across fields and is often tied to particular schools and industries rather than the university name alone.

One major difference is breadth of elite reputation. Stanford has a rare across-the-board status where people associate it with top-tier academics, major research, influential alumni, and very high selectivity in one package. That gives it a kind of instant signal value that translates easily across industries, even outside a student’s major.

Another difference is employer perception. Stanford’s name often carries extra weight in fields like tech, startups, consulting, finance, medicine, and academia because it is so closely linked with innovation and leadership pipelines. NYU also has strong employer recognition, especially in finance, business, media, arts, and entertainment, but that recognition is often more tied to its location in New York City and to specific programs such as Stern or Tisch.

Graduate schools tend to view Stanford as the more prestigious name as well, partly because of its research profile and overall academic standing across departments. NYU can still be an excellent launchpad, and in some circles its specialized programs are exceptionally respected, but in a straight name-recognition comparison, Stanford usually lands at a higher tier.

Public perception follows a similar pattern. Stanford is one of the handful of universities that many people immediately place in the top echelon of American higher education. NYU is widely respected and very visible, but it is more often seen as a prominent major university than as a universally top-tier prestige brand in the same way.
