Boston University vs Columbia for biology: which is better for undergraduate biology students?

I’m trying to decide between Boston University and Columbia for undergrad biology, and I’m mostly focused on which school is stronger for a student who wants a solid biology education and research opportunities.

I know both are well known, but I’m having trouble comparing them in a way that matters for someone planning to study biology in college.

Columbia has the edge for undergraduate biology. Its biology students benefit from a tighter connection to a major biomedical research ecosystem through Columbia University Irving Medical Center, strong access to labs in genetics, neuroscience, ecology, and cell biology, and a level of institutional prestige that can help with research placements and future graduate or medical applications.

One important difference is research infrastructure. Columbia’s undergraduate biology program sits alongside a major academic medical center and extensive life sciences research enterprise, so students are studying in an environment where high-level biological research is happening across disciplines every day. That tends to translate into more direct exposure to faculty doing cutting-edge work and more opportunities that align with pre-med, biotech, or PhD interests.

Another differentiator is academic intensity and course environment. Columbia’s Core Curriculum means you will get a broader and more structured liberal arts education outside biology, which some students love and others find restrictive. For biology specifically, that can be a plus if you want strong writing, analytical, and interdisciplinary training alongside the major.

Boston University is still a very strong option, especially if you want excellent science training in a large university with substantial research activity and a well-developed pre-health culture. BU also offers access to research, including through its medical campus and faculty labs, and it may feel somewhat more flexible or less compressed than Columbia’s academic atmosphere.

For pure undergraduate biology strength, Columbia stands out because of the depth of its research environment, the concentration of top-tier life sciences resources, and the academic reputation attached to those opportunities.
