Northwestern vs NYU for journalism: which school is better for an aspiring journalist?

The biggest difference is the academic setup. At Northwestern, journalism is not just one possible route inside a large university, it is centered in Medill, where reporting, interviewing, writing, audience strategy, and multimedia storytelling are part of a coherent program. That matters because aspiring journalists often benefit from earlier hands-on practice and tighter advising from faculty who are deeply connected to the industry.

Another clear separator is the student media ecosystem tied to that training. Northwestern students can work with The Daily Northwestern, North by Northwestern, Northwestern News Network, WNUR, and other outlets while also taking classes designed to sharpen the same skills. That overlap between coursework and student journalism can make it easier to build clips, get feedback, and leave college with a strong portfolio.

NYU is absolutely attractive for media because of its New York location, internships, and proximity to major publications, broadcast networks, and digital outlets. But for journalism specifically, it tends to feel more decentralized than Northwestern’s Medill-centered approach. NYU can be excellent for a student who wants to explore journalism alongside media studies, film, politics, or culture work in the city, but Northwestern is usually the cleaner choice for someone who wants intensive undergraduate journalism training from the start.
