University of Washington vs UC Davis for biology: which is better for an undergraduate biology major?

I’m trying to decide between University of Washington and UC Davis for biology, and I keep seeing both schools recommended. I’m mostly interested in the overall strength of the biology program as an undergrad, including research opportunities and preparation for future science or pre-med paths.

Since both schools seem solid, I want to know which one is generally considered the better fit for biology.

For undergraduate biology, UC Davis has the edge for most students. Its biology-related strengths are especially broad across animal biology, ecology, genetics, plant sciences, and agricultural and environmental life sciences, and those areas translate into a lot of undergraduate access to labs, fieldwork, and applied research. Davis also tends to feel more centered on the life sciences as part of the university’s identity, rather than biology being one excellent area within a very large research institution.

One concrete difference is how much the surrounding academic ecosystem reinforces biology. At UC Davis, the College of Biological Sciences, the School of Veterinary Medicine, agricultural and environmental programs, and the campus’s field and lab infrastructure all create a very biology-heavy environment for undergrads. That makes it easier to find research tied to organisms, ecosystems, genetics, food systems, and health, especially if you want hands-on work beyond purely lecture-based coursework.

Research access is strong at both schools, but Davis often feels more straightforward for undergraduates navigating biology opportunities. University of Washington is an outstanding research university with major strengths in medicine, public health, neuroscience, and molecular biosciences, especially through its connection to Seattle’s hospital and biotech ecosystem. The tradeoff is that UW can feel larger and more layered, so finding your place in research may require more initiative and persistence.

For pre-med or future science pathways, both can prepare you well, but they do so with slightly different flavors. UW is especially compelling if your interests lean toward biomedical research, translational science, or proximity to major medical centers. UC Davis stands out if you want a wide biology foundation with strong undergraduate engagement and flexibility across pre-med, research, environmental biology, or animal and plant sciences.
