Is UC Berkeley or NYU more prestigious for college admissions and future job prospects?
I’m trying to understand how these two schools are viewed by employers and grad schools, since both seem well known but in different ways. I see UC Berkeley talked about a lot for academics, while NYU seems especially strong in certain fields and in New York.
As a high school student making my college list, I want to know how people generally compare their prestige overall.

UC Berkeley carries more overall academic prestige, and that broader reputation usually reaches further with employers and graduate schools across fields. Berkeley is widely seen as one of the top public universities in the country, with especially strong standing in STEM, economics, social sciences, and many research-heavy areas. Its faculty reputation, research output, and long-established academic brand give it a stronger all-around name than NYU.
One big differentiator is national and international academic reputation. Berkeley has a deep reputation for scholarship and faculty strength that tends to matter in PhD admissions, research roles, and academically oriented careers. When people talk about elite public universities with a global name, Berkeley is almost always in that conversation, and that carries weight beyond any single city or industry.
Another difference is how each school’s strengths are distributed. NYU is highly respected, but its prestige is more concentrated in certain areas, especially business, finance, film, the arts, media, and some pre-professional paths tied to New York City. In those circles, the NYU name can be extremely powerful, particularly because of location and alumni access. Berkeley, though, tends to have the stronger cross-disciplinary reputation overall.
For future job prospects, the answer depends somewhat on field, but Berkeley’s name is usually the safer bet if you want broad prestige that translates in many directions. NYU can absolutely match or exceed Berkeley in specific industries where New York connections matter a lot, but in a general head-to-head comparison of overall prestige, Berkeley is more likely to be viewed as the more academically distinguished institution.
