Is UC Berkeley or WashU a better value for money for undergrad?

I’m trying to compare two schools I’m interested in and figure out which one makes more financial sense overall.

I know the sticker prices can be very different, but I’m mostly wondering how people think about value for money when choosing between a public school like UC Berkeley and a private school like WashU.

The biggest practical tradeoff is cost predictability versus resources per student. UC Berkeley can be an outstanding bargain, especially for California residents, but it is a large public university where access to classes, advising, and housing can feel less streamlined. WashU usually costs more on paper, yet it often provides stronger institutional support, smaller classes earlier on, and in some cases enough need-based aid to make the net price surprisingly competitive.

For value, the first thing to compare is not sticker price but your actual net cost over four years. Berkeley tends to be the clear money winner for in-state students paying close to public tuition rates. For out-of-state students, the gap narrows fast, because Berkeley’s nonresident cost can approach private-school territory while usually offering less financial aid flexibility than WashU.

Academically, both can open excellent doors, so the value question often comes down to how much structure and support you want for the price. Berkeley offers unmatched scale, major breadth, research access, and a powerful alumni network, but students often have to be more independent in navigating bureaucracy and competition. WashU is known for a more polished undergraduate experience, with more personalized advising and easier access to faculty, which can matter if you want a school that feels more intentionally built around undergrads.

Career outcomes are strong at both, but the return on investment depends on your major. In fields where Berkeley has exceptional industry proximity and brand strength, especially tech, engineering, economics, and some sciences, Berkeley can deliver enormous value if the cost is lower. WashU can be especially compelling if you receive substantial aid or if you value a campus environment where support services, pre-professional advising, and undergraduate attention are a major part of what you are paying for.

For a California resident, Berkeley is usually the better value unless WashU gives a much better aid package. For an out-of-state student, this becomes a real case-by-case comparison, and WashU can absolutely be the smarter financial choice if its net cost is similar or lower.
