UC Berkeley vs Georgetown for political science: which is better for an undergraduate politics major?

I’m a high school senior trying to decide between UC Berkeley and Georgetown for political science. I’m interested in studying politics in a serious academic setting and want to understand which school tends to be stronger for an undergrad who wants a solid poli sci education.

I’m mainly trying to compare the overall reputation and academic experience of the political science major at both schools.

For undergraduate political science, Georgetown has the edge for most students who want politics as a central part of their college experience. Its Washington, DC location shapes the academic experience in a very direct way, and the School of Foreign Service, government department, and policy-oriented culture create an unusually strong ecosystem for politics. Berkeley is excellent and very respected academically, but Georgetown is more tightly connected to day-to-day political institutions and undergraduate opportunities in that field.

The biggest differentiator is access to politics beyond the classroom. At Georgetown, internships on Capitol Hill, in federal agencies, think tanks, embassies, and advocacy organizations are woven into student life in a way few schools can match. That matters for an undergrad politics major because it changes how easily you can connect coursework to real institutions, speakers, alumni, and semester-time professional experience.

A second difference is the feel of the academic program. Berkeley political science is outstanding for theory, research, and breadth, and it benefits from being at a major public research university with famous faculty and a wide range of subfields. But large public university departments can feel less intimate for undergraduates. Georgetown tends to feel more deliberately centered on politics, international affairs, public service, and discussion-driven coursework, which many students find especially valuable in this major.

The third factor is reputation within politics-related circles. Berkeley carries enormous academic prestige overall, and no one would dismiss a Berkeley poli sci degree. But Georgetown has a particularly strong name in government, diplomacy, policy, and political internships because of its location and alumni network.
