UC Berkeley vs MIT for computer science: which is better for undergraduate CS?

I’m a high school junior comparing colleges and keep seeing UC Berkeley and MIT come up for computer science. I know both are strong, but I’m trying to understand which one is generally considered better for an undergraduate CS major in terms of academics and overall student experience.

I’m not looking for a personal ranking, just a clear comparison of how they are usually viewed for CS.

MIT has the edge for undergraduate computer science if you mean the strongest overall academic reputation and most consistently structured undergrad experience in CS.

Academically, both schools are top-tier, but they are viewed a little differently. MIT is often seen as the more concentrated, intensely technical option, where computer science sits at the center of the institution’s identity. Berkeley’s EECS and computer science programs are also elite and incredibly respected, but Berkeley is a much larger public university, so the experience can feel less personalized, especially in lower-division classes.

One big differentiator is undergraduate teaching structure. Berkeley offers enormous breadth and excellent classes, but students may need to be more proactive about getting into courses, finding smaller communities, and building faculty relationships inside a very large system.

For student experience, MIT is usually seen as more unified and campus-centered, with a strong shared culture around problem-solving, hacking, and hands-on work. Berkeley has a broader, more decentralized feel, with the advantages and complications that come with a major public research university in a big urban area. That means Berkeley can offer tremendous energy, scale, and cross-disciplinary opportunity, while MIT more often gets the nod for a tightly organized undergraduate CS experience.
