Is UC Berkeley or Georgia Tech considered more prestigious for engineering and tech careers?

UC Berkeley has the broader prestige edge overall, especially in the tech world, while Georgia Tech is viewed as equally serious and in some engineering circles just as strong. Georgia Tech is extremely respected by employers, but its prestige is often felt most strongly within engineering, computing, and technical recruiting rather than across as many fields.

One big differentiator is brand reach. Berkeley tends to have stronger name recognition outside engineering, so if you say you studied engineering there, people in tech, finance, research, startups, and even nontechnical fields usually immediately recognize it as elite. That matters somewhat for prestige conversations, even though both schools are excellent.

Another is ecosystem. Berkeley benefits from being deeply tied to Silicon Valley, with heavy recruiting, alumni presence, research connections, and startup energy all around it. For software, AI, entrepreneurship, and tech-adjacent careers, that environment gives Berkeley an extra shine that feeds its reputation.

Georgia Tech’s advantage is that employers often see it as intensely practical, rigorous, and very strong at producing engineers who are ready to work. In fields like mechanical, aerospace, industrial, civil, and computer engineering, Georgia Tech’s reputation is outstanding and sometimes indistinguishable from Berkeley’s among hiring managers. It may not carry quite the same broad prestige halo, but in technical circles it absolutely commands respect.

So if the question is pure prestige for engineering and tech careers, Berkeley gets a slight nod overall. If the question is how seriously employers take the engineering education itself, both are top-tier and the gap is much smaller than prestige discussions make it sound.
