Is Cornell or Penn better for finance careers?

I’m trying to narrow down my college list and both Cornell and Penn seem like strong options for finance. I’m mainly thinking about long-term career outcomes and recruiting into banking or other finance roles.

I know both schools have strong reputations, but I’m not sure how they compare for finance specifically.

Penn has the edge for finance careers, especially for undergraduate recruiting into investment banking, private equity, and other traditional Wall Street paths. Wharton gives Penn a uniquely finance-centered ecosystem, with more classmates targeting finance, more student organizations built around it, and a recruiting culture that is especially visible from the start of college. For long-term outcomes, Penn’s network in finance is one of the strongest in the country, and that matters both for internships and for later job moves.

The biggest differentiator is Wharton itself. A dedicated undergraduate business school means you can study finance in a very direct way, and recruiters know exactly what Penn students are getting academically and professionally. Even Penn students outside Wharton still benefit from the school’s location, alumni presence, and the sheer volume of finance-oriented activity on campus.

Cornell is still excellent, and it places very well into banking and buy-side roles, particularly through Dyson, the Nolan School, ILR, economics, applied economics, and other strong pipelines. Cornell has a serious alumni network on Wall Street, and many firms recruit there every year. The difference is less about whether Cornell can get you into finance and more about Penn having a denser, more finance-saturated environment.

Another concrete advantage for Penn is proximity and access. Being in Philadelphia puts students closer to New York and in a setting where networking events, treks, and interviews can be easier to manage. Cornell’s Ithaca location does not prevent strong recruiting, but Penn’s geography makes the finance ecosystem feel more immediate and embedded in campus life.

For pure finance career positioning, Penn is the safer bet.
