Is Washington University in St. Louis or Tufts University more fun for undergraduates?

I’m trying to figure out which school would feel better socially as a college student. I know both are strong academically, but I keep hearing different things about campus vibe, weekend life, and whether students actually seem happy outside of classes.

I’m mostly looking for a general sense of which one tends to be more fun overall for undergrads.

The biggest practical tradeoff is that WashU tends to offer a more self-contained campus social scene, while Tufts gives you a smaller campus community with much easier access to Boston. That means “fun” at WashU often comes from what happens on campus and in nearby student neighborhoods, whereas at Tufts a lot of student life is shaped by what you choose to do off campus in Somerville, Cambridge, and Boston. Students at both schools are active and engaged, but the social energy feels organized differently.

WashU is often described as having a polished, residential campus culture where students spend a lot of time together in campus spaces, clubs, Greek life, performances, and apartment gatherings nearby. The campus itself is attractive and cohesive, which matters more than people sometimes realize for day-to-day social life. It can feel easier to plug into a central undergraduate scene there, especially if you like having a defined campus and a lot happening within that orbit.

Tufts tends to feel more quirky, independent, and less campus-bubble oriented. Students are usually very involved, funny, creative, and socially aware, but the vibe can be a bit more scattered because people spread out across different friend groups, neighborhoods, and city plans. Weekend life can be excellent, but it often depends more on personal initiative than on a single dominant campus scene.

In terms of student happiness, both schools have strong academics and busy students, so neither is carefree in a simplistic way. WashU often gets the edge from students who want a warmer, more cohesive social environment with a traditional residential feel. Tufts is often more appealing to students who think access to the city itself makes college life more exciting, even if the campus social scene feels a little less centralized.

If the question is purely which one feels more fun for the average undergrad, I’d give a slight edge to WashU. Tufts can absolutely be more exciting for the right student, but WashU more often feels like the place where undergraduate life runs smoothly and socially from the start.
