Which is better for aerospace engineering, Virginia Tech or Purdue?

I’m trying to narrow down my college list for aerospace engineering and keep seeing Virginia Tech and Purdue come up a lot. Both seem strong, but I’m not sure which one is generally considered better for the major itself.

I’m mainly looking at the overall reputation of the aerospace program and how well it prepares students for internships and jobs.

Purdue has the stronger overall reputation for aerospace engineering. Its School of Aeronautics and Astronautics is one of the most established in the country, and Purdue’s history in flight and space is unusually deep, which gives the program a level of name recognition that carries real weight with employers. For aerospace specifically, Purdue is more often the school people point to first.

One major differentiator is industry visibility. Purdue has long-standing ties to major aerospace employers, and its alumni network in aviation, defense, and space is especially broad. That tends to help with recruiting, internships, and job placement because companies already know the program well and regularly hire from it.

Another difference is the program’s identity within the university. At Purdue, aerospace is a flagship engineering area, not just a strong option within a larger college of engineering. The department is known for serious depth in areas like propulsion, aerodynamics, structures, and astronautics, so students interested in the full range of aerospace pathways usually find more built-in specialization and research momentum there.

Virginia Tech is still an excellent choice and very respected in engineering. It offers strong hands-on learning, good faculty access, and solid recruiting outcomes, especially for students who are proactive. But when the question is specifically which school is more widely regarded as the top aerospace brand and better positioned for aerospace-focused internships and jobs, Purdue usually has the edge.
