Virginia Tech vs University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign for engineering: which is better for an undergrad engineering degree?

I’m a high school senior trying to narrow down my college list for engineering, and these two schools keep coming up. Both seem strong, but I’m having trouble figuring out which one is generally considered the better choice for an engineering major.

I’m mostly looking for a straightforward comparison of the overall engineering reputation and undergrad experience between Virginia Tech and UIUC.

UIUC has the edge for engineering overall. Its College of Engineering is one of the most established and widely recognized in the country, and across many engineering fields, especially areas like computer engineering, electrical engineering, civil, mechanical, and materials, it tends to carry more national weight. For pure engineering reputation and breadth, Illinois is the stronger name.

One concrete difference is program depth. UIUC offers a very large engineering ecosystem with extensive research activity, major lab infrastructure, and strong ties to employers in both industry and graduate education. That scale can translate into more specialized coursework, more faculty doing high-level research, and a broader set of technical opportunities even at the undergraduate level.

Another differentiator is recruiting reach. Both schools place students well, but UIUC is especially visible to major engineering and tech employers nationwide. Virginia Tech has an excellent reputation too, particularly on the East Coast and in fields like aerospace, mechanical, civil, and computer-related areas, but Illinois tends to have slightly broader national pull across engineering disciplines.

For undergraduate experience, Virginia Tech is often seen as a bit more personal and community-oriented within engineering. Its engineering school is large, but many students describe a strong campus culture, loyal alumni base, and a more cohesive feel. UIUC can feel bigger and more intense, which is a plus for some students and a drawback for others.

Virginia Tech is a highly respected engineering school and for many students the difference in outcomes would be much smaller than the reputation gap suggests. But if the question is simply which school is more highly regarded overall for an undergraduate engineering degree, UIUC comes out ahead.
