Villanova vs Colgate for pre-med: which is better for preparing for med school?

I’m trying to decide between Villanova and Colgate and I want to study pre-med. I know medical schools care a lot about grades, coursework, research, and advising, so I’m mainly wondering which school tends to give pre-med students a stronger path toward med school.

I’m looking for a general comparison of the pre-med experience at each school, not just overall reputation.

For pre-med, Villanova usually gives a more built-out, practical path if you want clear structure, easier access to nearby hospitals and clinical settings, and the resources of a larger university. Colgate can also work very well, but it tends to suit a student who wants a smaller liberal arts environment, closer faculty relationships, and is comfortable being more proactive about finding some medical experiences off campus.

At Villanova, one of the biggest advantages is location. Being near Philadelphia matters for pre-med because clinical exposure, volunteering, shadowing, and sometimes research are easier to find when you are close to major hospitals and healthcare systems.

Villanova fits the student who wants a campus where pre-med is common and well supported, with more obvious pathways into medicine-related extracurriculars during the semester. If you like having more peers on the same track, more formal advising infrastructure, and a suburban campus with access to a major city, that tends to be an advantage.

Colgate is appealing for a different kind of student. If you want small classes, strong professor access, and a classic liberal arts college experience where science faculty may know you very well, Colgate can be excellent preparation. That kind of environment can help with recommendation letters, mentoring, and building strong classroom relationships, which matter a lot for med school applications.

The tradeoff is that Colgate’s rural location makes clinical exposure and hospital-based opportunities less immediate than at Villanova. Those experiences are still possible, but they may require more planning, transportation, and initiative. For a student who is self-directed and likes the intimacy of a smaller campus, that may be perfectly fine. For someone who wants frequent, convenient access to medical settings from early on, Villanova has the edge.

So the stronger pre-med preparation depends on how you work best, but in a general comparison focused specifically on the med school path, Villanova has the more straightforward setup. Colgate is compelling when your priority is close faculty attention and a liberal arts setting, especially if you are confident you will seek out opportunities actively.
