Is UC Irvine or UC Riverside more selective for admissions?

I’m trying to compare my chances at these two UC schools and keep seeing different opinions online. I know both are public universities, but I’m not sure which one is generally harder to get into.

I’m mainly looking for a simple comparison of admissions selectivity between UC Irvine and UC Riverside.

UC Irvine is more selective for admissions than UC Riverside. In the UC system, Irvine is typically viewed as one of the more competitive campuses outside the very top tier, while Riverside is more accessible overall. For a simple chances comparison, applicants usually need a stronger overall profile to be competitive at Irvine.

One clear differentiator is applicant demand. UC Irvine draws a very large, broad applicant pool and has especially strong interest from students targeting popular majors like biology, computer science, business-related pathways, and engineering. That heavier volume and concentration of high-achieving applicants makes admission tougher there.

Another difference is how each campus is perceived academically and regionally. Irvine benefits from its Orange County location, strong research reputation, and high demand for pre-health, STEM, and professional-track programs. Riverside is also a respected UC campus with solid academics and research opportunities, but it does not face the same level of admissions pressure across as many majors.

Major choice matters at both schools, but especially at Irvine. A less selective major at UCI can still be harder to enter than many majors at UCR, and highly impacted programs widen that gap even more.
