For internships, is UT Austin or NYU better for college students?

NYU has the edge for internships because its students are embedded in New York City during the school year, which makes part-time, in-semester internships much easier to access across industries. The city location matters a lot when internship hunting is not tied to one major, since finance, media, fashion, tech, nonprofits, arts, consulting, and startups are all densely concentrated nearby. NYU’s academic calendar and urban setup also make it common for students to build internships into the semester rather than waiting only for summer.

NYU benefits from sheer proximity to employers. Being able to take the subway to an interview or work a few days a week during the semester creates more volume and flexibility, especially for students still exploring fields. That setup can be especially useful early in college, when short-term internships, externships, and networking events help students test interests before committing to one path.

UT Austin is still excellent, especially because Austin has a fast-growing economy and strong ties to tech, business, government, and startups. The university also has a huge alumni network, major career fairs, and well-developed employer relationships. For many students, that translates into strong internship outcomes, but the opportunities are somewhat more dependent on specific industries and often feel more concentrated in summer recruiting than NYU’s year-round city access.

Another difference is the campus experience around recruiting. At UT Austin, internship access often runs through school-based career centers, employer events, and organized pipelines, which can work very well at a large flagship university. At NYU, a lot of opportunity comes from both formal recruiting and the fact that employers are physically nearby, so students can network and intern in a more continuous way.
