Is UT Austin or NYU better for economics as an undergraduate?

I'm trying to narrow down my college list and both UT Austin and NYU are on it for economics. I know they have different locations and campus vibes, but I'm mostly trying to understand which one is generally stronger for an econ major and student opportunities.

I want to compare them in a way that actually matters for undergrad economics, not just overall school reputation.

NYU has the edge for undergraduate economics if you want the strongest academic reputation in econ itself and the deepest access to finance, policy, and research opportunities during the school year. Its economics department is especially well regarded, the New York location creates unusually direct internship access, and the program sits in an ecosystem that includes major employers, policy organizations, and research centers.

One concrete difference is department strength and visibility in economics as a discipline. NYU’s economics faculty and research profile are widely considered more prominent, and that matters if you want rigorous theory, stronger signaling for grad school, or exposure to high-level economic research early.

Another difference is proximity to relevant work while you are still an undergrad. At NYU, internships in finance, consulting, economic research, data analysis, and public policy are often available during the semester because you are in Manhattan. UT Austin has solid opportunities too, especially in Texas business and state government, but the day-to-day density of econ-adjacent employers is not the same.

UT Austin becomes very compelling on value and breadth. Its economics major is respected, the university is large and resource-rich, and Austin offers access to a growing tech and business scene plus state policy institutions. UT can be an especially smart choice if cost matters, if you want a classic campus experience, or if you may pair economics with business, math, statistics, or public policy in a big public-university environment.

A final practical difference is how each school connects economics to adjacent paths. NYU is especially powerful for students aiming toward finance, economic consulting, quantitative roles, and research-heavy outcomes tied to New York. UT is excellent for students who want flexibility, strong academics without the same price tag for many applicants, and a broader campus infrastructure around internships, student life, and interdisciplinary options.
