University of Minnesota vs. University of Wisconsin for computer science: which is stronger overall?

I’m a high school senior trying to narrow down my list, and both of these schools are on it for computer science. I’m mostly interested in how they compare in overall CS reputation, academic quality, and how well they set students up for internships and jobs.

I know both are big public universities, so I’m trying to understand which one tends to be the stronger choice for CS overall.

University of Wisconsin–Madison has the stronger overall edge for computer science.

One clear differentiator is department strength and academic depth. Wisconsin’s computer sciences program is long-established and highly regarded, with strong offerings across systems, AI, theory, data, graphics, and interdisciplinary computing. Minnesota Twin Cities also has a respected CS program and serious research activity, but Wisconsin is more often the school people point to first when talking about top public-university CS options.

Another difference is recruiting momentum. Madison benefits from a very large employer presence, strong alumni reach, and a campus reputation that helps with internship and full-time hiring in tech, finance, and engineering-adjacent roles. Minnesota students absolutely land strong internships and jobs too, especially with the advantage of being in the Twin Cities metro, but Wisconsin tends to have the slightly stronger national pull.

The student experience also matters in a practical way. Both are big flagships with large classes in intro sequences, plenty of opportunities, and the need to be proactive. Wisconsin often stands out for the sheer scale of its CS community and the visibility of the major on campus, while Minnesota can feel appealing if you want direct access to a major urban area and local companies during the school year.

So if the question is simply which school is stronger overall for CS on reputation, academics, and career setup, Wisconsin gets the nod. Minnesota is still an excellent option, especially if cost, location, or in-state advantages make it more attractive.
