UMass Amherst vs Ohio State for campus life

I’m trying to decide between these two schools and campus life is a big factor for me. I care most about whether the campus feels social, active, and easy to get involved in outside of classes.

I’d like to hear how students compare the overall vibe, weekend scene, and general student experience at UMass Amherst and Ohio State.

Both schools have very active campus life, but they feel different in practice. Ohio State tends to feel bigger, louder, and more nonstop, with the energy of a huge Big Ten campus right in Columbus. UMass Amherst is also social and busy, but it usually feels more self-contained and campus-centered, with a classic college-town rhythm in Amherst and the Five College area.

Ohio State fits students who want a high-energy environment where something is always happening and where school spirit is hard to miss. Football culture, major campus traditions, a student organization scene, and the fact that you are in a large city all make the social atmosphere feel constant. Weekends at Ohio State are usually full both on and off campus, so students who like variety, crowds, and easy access to restaurants, concerts, internships, and city events often find it exciting.

UMass Amherst makes more sense for someone who wants a social campus without quite as much intensity. The campus has a strong residential feel, lots of clubs and events, and a student experience that is often more centered on the university itself rather than a major surrounding city. Because Amherst is smaller, students often spend more time in campus spaces, at dining halls, at nearby apartments, or exploring the broader Five College community. That can create a close-knit feel, especially if you like the idea of a traditional campus where people actually stay around on weekends.

For weekend life specifically, Ohio State usually offers more sheer volume and range. UMass can still be lively, but the energy is more contained and less urban. If you picture yourself wanting a huge-school atmosphere with major sports and a busier off-campus scene, Ohio State stands out. If you want an active student life that still feels a bit more manageable and rooted in the campus itself, UMass Amherst often lands better.
